Dörentrup, the smallest municipality in the district of Lippe with around 7,700 inhabitants, is a community with a wide variety of associations and a sense of community and families.
There are currently 963 children up to the age of 13 and 457 young people between the ages of 13 and 18 living in Dörentrup. There are also 2,100 senior citizens aged between 65 and 103 who are part of the lively village community. Located in the countryside, the municipality's overall strategy is not only family-friendly but also promotes sustainable mobility and energy, sustainable tourism and nature-based education.
The rural municipality of Dörentrup impressed the jury with its overall strategy for social village development when it was awarded the Landespreis für familienfreundliche Kommunen.

Local heritage associations and village communities actively work together with the municipality on development. Over the years, this has resulted in places where young and old come together - be it on a village walk on the boules court, at flea markets or as part of an invitation to a friendly get-together.
Dörentrup is clearly committed to the integration of refugees. This includes decentralized accommodation for families in single-family homes in the individual districts. This promotes integration and makes it easier to live together with the new residents.
Sport in combination with nature are two key areas of community development in Dörentrup. To get children and young people interested in sport, the municipality and the community sports association employ an FSJ volunteer every year. In addition, nature parks such as the Pottkuhle, the village of animals or the Schwelentrup wildlife observation area invite visitors to enjoy nature-based recreation and/or exercise. Playgrounds, an outdoor fitness facility, a barefoot course and a disc and frisbee golf course also invite young and old to get active. In addition, the sports clubs offer a wide range of activities including soccer, handball, tennis, table tennis, gymnastics, etc.
The cities of Hamm, Gladbeck and Brühl, the district of Düren with its 15 towns belonging to the district and the municipality of Windeck were also recognized for their innovative, family-friendly offers . The projects range from family-oriented intergenerational projects to family-friendly town halls.
